The Affiliate Route to Success

A former air traffic controller, Rosalind, was a normal
American girl lurking around Online Dating sites, making
friends and having fun.

She had no real business experience except for failures
trying to sell crafts at neighborhood fairs.

Her first real attempt was when she put up a seed exchange
gardening site. She enjoyed doing it although she earned no
money from it. Yet, she made friends interested in
gardening. And, of course, her garden was beautiful.

Months later, by chance, she came across a banner ad for
'One and Only', the popular online dating service, during
one of her chats. The ad talked about webmasters making
money.

Drawn in by the promise, she quickly she put together a
one-page site and promoted 'One and Only' online dating
service. The very first day she made $10.99 US.

That got her excited. Next she tried promoting an affiliate
program in 1997 and tasted reasonable success.

Soon, she started her own online dating service
"Sage-Hearts.com" in 1998. With bucket loads of resources,
she promoted other dating services as an affiliate and made
enough money.

Thereafter, realizing the potential of affiliate programs,
she turned serious and spent a lot of time reading online
marketing techniques.

And, in the process, found out that one needn't have a
product of one's own to succeed online.

Yes. She discovered the affiliate route to success.

In 2000, she quit her job and began running business from
home. When she put in her papers she was already earning
about $40,000 a month through them.

Today, Rosalind earns 95% of her $500,000 through them.
Her online business consists of affiliate marketing, product
reselling, and some auction selling besides publishing her
own info products.

All this, after some hard work.

A self-starter, she learnt html, web design and online
business. Read books and even took up some courses.

How does one spot a good affiliate program?

Look for easy access to sales and visitor traffic.
Site managers should be responsive to queries. Real-time
reporting of statistics is important. Low 'minimum payout',
as little as $25, is necessary to earn some money each day.
And affiliate programs must pay every week or so. The more
frequent, the better, she explains.

Rosalind doesn't look at just great programs to promote,
but great service to go with it. Very often she buys
products, tests them out before recommending them to people.

And, building high volume traffic is key to affiliate
success, she believes. Rosalind doesn't believe in Search
Engine Optimization.

She buys traffic. Yeah, she uses the pay-per-click search
engines.
After she made her money, and had her two minutes of fame,
she put together Super Affiliate Handbook. An ebook that
detailed her efforts and learnings.

That too was a success.

Get the 80:20 magic to work for you!

Increasing the profits is the ultimate motive of every
businessperson. This is especially critical in the case of
small businesses as many of them operate at low profit
levels.

They normally have to put in a great deal of hard
work coupled with time and/or money but achieve smaller
results, as economies of scale are not in their favor.

The silver lining is that there is a way to get round it.
The law of 80:20. Also called the 'Law of Vital Few,
Trivial Many'

Get it to work for you.

It is a tool that many big companies have used
successfully to maximize the use of their resources like
time and money. You too can use it to your advantage.

Your two most important resources are your time and money.

Your most important activity is marketing your online
business.

Let's see how you can use this law in marketing, save 80%
of your time and investments in marketing, and get the same
results, or better still, increase the productivity of your
time and marketing investments by up to 300%.

Start by making a list of all the marketing activities you
do (or propose to do) in connection with your online
business. Then make an estimation of the amount of time
and money spent on each.

See how each correlates with increasing the profits or
adding value to your customer and classify them as vital
or trivial.

See if you can chop off some (or even all) of the trivial
activities without affecting the functioning of the
business.

If you think you can spare the money, outsource some
activities and use the time gained to further your
business.

On the other hand, if you feel that you could save money
by putting in time to learn and carry out certain
activities currently outsourced, go ahead and do it.

Usually for people who are effective, time is a more
important resource than money, though many don't
realize it.

The 80:20 law can be applied successfully to online
marketing.

Did you know that a mere 20% of your online marketing
efforts produce 80% of results. The balance 80% efforts
only produce 20% results.

Now, just think of the results you could achieve if you
could identify these high yield areas. This will gradually
happen as you notice the buying patterns emerge.

Certain products will consistently sell better, increase
your stocks based on this demand.

Once you dedicate 80% of your efforts to the 'high yield'
(80% result) areas, your results could be as high as 320%
more, as against just 20% results (pure and simple
arithmetic)!

So, overall, you could achieve 400% results than just 100%,
or 4 times the results, for the same efforts overall.

Take for example, search engine positioning, which is a
major activity for online businesses but also happens to
be a time consuming affair.

When you have to choose between devoting time to this and
other vital activities, the smart choice would be to
outsource this service.

This is because search engine positioning is a service
available at a small fee and can prove to be a real boon
in freeing your time. Time that could help in, maybe
tapping a new market segment and creating new income
sources.

You may even identify just one of your resources, time or
money, as critical to you, and focus on that, not an easy
task though.
