How did a College
Junior turn a hobby into a successful
business?
Back in 1996, a young college junior, in the
University of
Oregon, badly needed a fleece jacket. He couldn't afford
it. So he did the next best thing. Buy two yards of fleece,
look at a pattern and sew it.
His first attempt at sewing a jacket elicited
'wow'
comments from friends. And he even got a few orders.
Initially, he began doing it as a hobby even though it
was time consuming. He cut fabric on the college floor
and sewed in the campus bedroom. After graduation in
1998, he took up an assignment as coach of the Oregon
University's Rowing Team.
Egged on by a group of friends, Scott set up
a local shop
in Eugene, Oregon. And 'Beyond Fleece Clothing' was born:

Its product line consisted of jackets, vests,
pants, and
pullovers in fleece and soft shell fabrics.
Every weekend, he would set off on his bike,
armed with a
backpack of garments, to the embroiders some miles away.
Now he's come a long way.
Working with support from Score and micro loans
through
the SBA, today everything is computerized. The Score
counselors helped him learn the nuances of business.
From developing niche markets to using the media to reach
out, Scott learnt many vital business lessons.
In 2001, a rave review from a staffer of Backpacker
magazine
about his fleece jacket turned his life. Orders flowed and
life was never the same again. These days Beyond Fleece
Clothing is rated one of the top 5 makers of technical
outdoor clothing. And the U.S. Small Business
Administration awarded him with a special 'young
entrepreneur' award.
For those fed up with 'off the rack' stuff and
one brand
fits all concepts, Scott Jones's fleece jackets are

Like Dell and Toyota, Scott believes in mass
customization.

$500,000 in 2003 is inching towards the $1 million this
year.

Jottings

Hi ,
Over the last ten days, I had invited you to
share
your 'Wish List'.
About unfulfilled needs that may have cropped
up at
any point of time, as a webmaster, ezine publisher,
online marketer or entrepreneur. Or even as a normal
person.
We have received a good number of responses.
Plenty
of interesting wishes.

these are, no doubt, part of most of our 'wish lists',

Powerful Strategies for Small Businesses - II

We have
dealt with the strategy of selling high value
products to a small select/ niche group of customers in
detail in the last article. This time we will delve into the
strategy of selling low value products to a mass market.
Take a trip
around the web, just dropping into sites that
tickle your fancy. You'll find that most e-tailers have
jumped onto the bandwagon of selling low value products to
a mass market. Do you think you stand a chance?
We think you do. Of course, only if you create
your own
unique action plan and work towards achieving it.
I believe your basic starting point should NOT
be your
website, but a good Newsletter. A newsletter has the
advantage in that it gives you the opportunity to draw the
'opt-in' subscribers to your site (or whatever is your sales
front-end tool) again and again, week after week. In
comparison, any direct traffic you draw to your site is a
one-time affair. And typically, a sale takes much longer
than a single visit.
If you have a website, make it as attractive
as possible
and easy to navigate. Make a checklist of all the features
your prospective customers would look for in your site and
make sure they are available. Next, have a good domain
name, and hire a good web host.
The next step is to promote the site by driving
traffic
through various initiatives. Start by identifying multiple
keywords, customizing for each keyword and place these in
paid and free search engines.
Run an e-advertising
campaign, identify paid and free
e-zines to advertise in, write the copy, correspond and
insert the ads regularly. Once you've got a list of
prospects, try to convert them by running an ezine, set up
autoresponders, create messages for them, reply to
prospects' mails, create and offer tutorials, make special
offers, write powerful headlines, and descriptions and may
be, also make FFA links if you have the time.
If you are overwhelmed by all these, let me
give you a
tip. Just identify 1, 2 or 3 of these as the most potential
media to focus on, and just concentrate on them; ignore the
rest. If you have made the right choice of these media for
promotions, you would not have lost out much.
Initially, you'll have to put in a great deal
of effort
until the whole system gathers momentum. The revenues will
start flowing in only in small trickles and can be quite
frustrating for first-timers. However, you need to hang on
for a while and then, slowly but surely, success will
follow, if your proposition is sound.
