2. Online Success Story

Passion for horses turns into a business

Deb Steinberg simply loved horses. She had her own horse as
a child, and naturally made friends with people who shared the
same interests. About six years ago when she was looking
for a gift for a horse lover friend - the natural choice
was an equine gift!

However, she was surprised that she could not find anything
reasonably priced.

That set this horse lover thinking - "Maybe, there are many
out there who are frustrated just like me, after fruitless
searches for a good equine gift item."

The idea of having her own business passed through her mind
now and then. During her daily commute of 140 miles a day
to work, along with her husband, Deb began to draw up
plans to be on her own. She decided to sell horse gifts,
jewelry, equine art, toys & clothing.

Deb took some time to study the market, competition and
opportunities before arriving at the conclusion that her
stuff had to be unique, attractive and reasonably priced.

Not just that. She made sure that enough content was there
to keep the horse lovers surfing on her site.

Having worked out the nitty gritties including items,
suppliers and a $30,000 loan, Deb launched www.nickers.com
in April 1998.

She stacked inventory of over a 100 items at home and took
care of business after returning from work. Six months
later, she put in her papers to concentrate on her own
business.

Soon she began to take part in horse shows to promote her
business. Things began to happen and in 2000, her company,
Nickers & Neighs, Inc., made $150,000 in sales.

Smart Deb put her experience of working as service manager
in a Call Center to utmost use, taking care of customers
and answering their queries.

As business grew and Deb found it difficult to operate out
of her home, she decided to move to her own place.

Months later she bought a building and set up retail
store, Nickers & Neighs, in Gainesville, Texas.

And thereafter she got herself Mysty, a handsome mare,
and Angel, to keep company, along with family.

Today, www.Nickers.com offers more than 500 items and
is one of the largest online stores for equine gifts.

Now, Deb thanks the day she seized the opportunity to set
up her business. A successful one at that.

Showcase your expertise for profits!

The key to success on the net is expertise in your chosen
field. It also includes projecting your expertise to derive
the maximum benefit.

Some of you may be on firm ground with your 'brick and
mortar' business, going great guns. But the virtual world
could make you uneasy - let me share a few valuable secrets.

Secrets that could help you get rich.

Follow my three simple rules:
1) Gather in-depth knowledge (expertise) of your domain,
starting today.
2) Keep communicating - (write, or if you are not a good
writer, use ghost writers).
3) Show interest in prospects' queries and answer all mails
(or posts).

First, become a member of all the newsgroups in your domain
and related domains. Assimilate all available information.
Try to form your own thoughts, ideas and views. Write them
in your e-zine and reach your prospects. Actively seek
feedback on areas that interest your prospects and monitor
the factors that motivate their purchases. This will increase
your expertise soon. Within a short time you will discover
that you have, in deed, become an expert. There are many
online experts in different fields who earn six or five
figure incomes today, who started off with no more than
just an interest.

Once you've built expertise, the trick is to market it
effectively. And the golden rule is communicate, communicate
and communicate! Through writing powerful and focused
e-mails with links to your site. This has worked far better
than driving traffic to the website. Of course, writing
powerfully and effectively could produce several times higher
results than just writing, however good the content.

Some of my clients owning Pet Shop and Gift Shop were not
really experts in their areas; they hired experts to get
their writing going. There were other clients who were
experts in areas like Specialty Animal Farming and Hypnotism
but could not properly identify and present customer
benefits in a creative and appealing advertising style. For
this, they sought professional writing help.

The real money-spinners are niche markets like 'High
Altitude Mountaineering', 'Secrets of Indian massage',
'Recipes for Acute Diabetics'. It's easier to gain expertise
in these areas and establish yourself as an expert. If you
have the interest and inclination in these areas, that is!
Another potential money-spinner, even if a little more
difficult to accomplish, is extending these and making them
e-zines with paid subscriptions.

Interesting ways to pep up your expertise in a jiffy are
getting columns written by name brand guest writers,
organizing online chat shows with them and getting associated
with related events happening online.

And then, don't forget my third rule - keep your prospects
happy, interact with them by replying to every mail and
query of theirs. And they'll keep your revenues flowing.

Now, you have enough to really get started on. Do write in
and share your experiences. You can keep your earnings,
though!
