Turning a hobby into a successful business
When Charlotte Fowkes,
a computer programmer, was fired from her job for
missing from work too often, to attend to her sick child, she
decided to work
from home.
Heeding to her friends'
and family's advice, she turned to an old hobby.
Baby Cakes.
Now, Baby Cakes are
actually gift packs made to look like cakes since they
are layered just as normal cakes. Made of diapers, they are
filled with bibs,
bottles, blankets, towels, socks and every thing a parent needs
to get the
child started.
Colorful and personalized,
they are sure to 'wow' everybody.
It all started when
her child got one such diaper gift in 1992. Struck by the
novelty, Charlotte began to improve upon it. Soon she gifted
them to friends
and most were actually thrilled by the Baby Cake.
But, it took six
years, and a professional setback, to begin selling them.
So in 1998, she kicked
off her Baby Cakes business. At first, she took
samples to local gift shops and florists. Encouraged by the
response, she
took her business further.
Building a community
by networking with local hospitals and participating in
Neighborhood Craft Fairs, Charlotte managed business with part-time
moms
to help.
Her offline activities
included dropping catalogs for people and being part of
baby shows. Of course, she never forgot to share her business
card with every
one she met.
When a local radio
station launched a program to call in people to come and
undergo a pregnancy test and then call the expectant fathers
to break the news,
Charlotte was quick to spot an opportunity.
She offered free
gifts for all the expectant moms and dads and made instant
news herself.
Initially skeptical
about online prospects, she thought she might just give it a
try. The first five months got her just two orders through her
website.

But that was not
going to deter Charlotte in any way.
Then she did a bit
of reading and began submitting her site to search engines,
and exchanged links with similar sites. And she worked joint
ventures with other
‘mom’ sites. Soon enough in 1999, her site was listed on Yahoo.
But, the icing on
the cake was the order from HBO, for the popular program
'Sex and the City', where Charlotte's cake was featured. Life
was never the
same again for her.
Local stations followed
up the HBO episode and soon she was also featured
in women's magazines.
Today, she has orders
by the dozens and a tie up with UPS ensures that her
clients get the gift packs in time. What began in the basement
of her home
has now turned in to a 4,000 sq. ft. showroom.
Meeting the demands
of nearly 100 wholesalers and websites is tough indeed.
But, with sales of
$130,000 Charlotte isn't complaining. And is, in fact, having
loads of fun.

Strategies that work!

You've identified
your target and your area of specialization … and now what?
The next step would be to create a strategy that works. Let
me take you
though a real strategy that has worked for me and my clients.
One of my clients
runs an online pharmacy that stocks generic world class
drugs from India. These low priced drugs are a godsend to patients
who
save a lot on their medical expenses.
The first step was
to create awareness and build credibility. This was done
through initiating a Newsletter-cum-Forum for discussions. Prospects
became
subscribers through the 'opt-in' route. The Forum was conceived
as an
independent entity with only sponsorship being taken care of
by the client.
It gained respectability while the sponsored ads served as reminders.
A campaign of 5 short
and crisp initial set of mailers was scheduled. This
helped avoid information overload that may have lead to early
opt-outs.
The first mailer was a 'welcome message' with an exclusive offer,
the
second - a tempting bonus offer, the third - pushing the offer
with a
deadline, fourth - a free sampler with free shipping and handling
and fifth
- the final offer!
When you find someone
hooked to the free offer - it's time to slowly reel them
in with 5 more mailers - follow-up mailers from a different
autoresponder
(database). Just as my client did. The first of these simply
gave the facts and
date of dispatch of their sample and invited them to be a regular.
The second
mailer, which reached after the receipt of consignments politely
sought their
feedback. The third asked for feedback with an incentive, the
fourth stepped
the tempo up with an enticing offer and the fifth gently reminded
the customer.
Some tips on newsletters
and mailers are - keep them crisp and lively. Be
careful with your choice of words, they must be in line with
the original
message to avoid spam complaints. Plan your mailers ahead and
sequence
them logically. They must work as a campaign with continuity,
yet make sense
to a person who reads just any one!
And now to tie up
the loose ends, the prospects who have not even tried the
samples yet have not unsubscribed are still not lost. More likely
they have not
read the messages. Send them prospect follow-up mailers and
newsletters.
And for those who have bitten, after the follow-up mailers,
keep them on your
customer mailing list and keep in touch with them through a
few initial customer
follow-up mailers and weekly newsletters. Keep the Newsletter-cum-forum
alive for a fresh crop of prospects!
And now, to return
to the online pharmacy that has implemented these
(One of the very few ethical marketing companies in this business),
it's making
healthy profits!
