Christine Nicholls's
Secrets of Working at Home
Christine Nicholls
put her career before everything else and was what you
could call a hard-core professional.
After working in
a tech company for nearly five years, she felt she needed to
upgrade her skills and signed up for an MBA program. It kept
her busier than
ever before. Challenges at work kept her excited too. She met
Mike Silversides
at office, fell in love and slipped the ring. And life fell
into a comfortable routine.
Until…she suddenly
found herself in her 30s and decided to have children.
And it wasn't long before, Katherine and Duncan came into her
world.
But, then her troubles
began. Her daughter didn't adjust too well with the
Infant Day Care and Christine was able to work only three days
a week.
By the same time,
her company was downsizing and although she got a good
exit package, Catherine was soon left with a New Job - Full
Time Mom.
For the next one
year she tried several part-time offers, but they involved travel
and kept her away from her children for more hours than she
wanted to.
Alongside her work,
Christine researched home-based businesses. Together
with Mike, she checked out renting baby equipment and fine art
printing. But,
dropped both, despite having business plans ready, since they
cramped their
lifestyle plans.
They threw up ideas
at random and months later she chanced upon the idea
of sending crafts by mail to children.
As a child she had
loved crocheting, ceramics, and needlepoint and realized
that there was a special joy in doing them.
She knew children
love to get surprise mails and also enjoy making things by
themselves.
Above all, she felt
that this gave the little ones a chance to use their
imagination and creativity besides giving them the feeling of
accomplishment.
And so, Creative
Kids at Home came to be founded, in 1999.
Soon, Mike and Christine
put together a website and she was creating
crafts on the kitchen table, taking calls and answering mails.
All, as she
managed her time between children and work at home.
She made crafts for
every occasion - birthdays, holidays, parties and rainy days.
Sure enough she had
found a niche. At first, she reached out to every one she
knew in the neighborhood. Common sense Public Relations seemed
to work
for her.
Then using a newsletter
she built a community. They were delighted with her
novel products.
And her orders began
trickling in.
Today, her
website www.creativekidsathome.com
draws in
over 50,000 visitors each month and boasts of 5,000 newsletter
subscribers.
And Catherine makes
$20,000 per year working only 10 hrs a week.

Powerful Communication
for Great Profits!

Lara looked out at
the cluster of dismal apartments for the hundredth time. She
wondered if there was a way she could make more money since,
with her two
small kids, going to work was out of question. Besides, she
had no degree, no
specific talent to speak of. Except, of course, Ikebana, - the
beautiful Japanese
art of arranging flowers, a hobby she had picked up from her
friend some time
back.
Just then the doorbell
rang. It was Hazel, her smart neighbor. During the chat
that ensued, Lara expressed her need for a means of additional
income. Hazel
suggested, "You're good at Ikebana. Why don't you create
a website offering
Ikebana courses and services? Since it's quite a rare art, I'm
sure there'll be at
least a few interested women who'll be your customers."
Lara followed Hazel's
suggestions and worked hard. Soon enough, she made
enough to employ babysitters and start her own Ikebana Center,
a professional
outfit.
What are the secrets
of Lara's success? She discovered her own niche from
her hobby (of all things), became an expert in it, identified
her target, and made
it her business.
Like Lara, you could
develop your hobby (or professional expertise, or unused
knowledge/ skills), into a lucrative business proposition. Don't
worry if the niche
is small. In fact, most often, smaller niches make better business,
because there
are likely to be fewer experts, esp. online, and the prospects
have fewer
options.
Now, identify your
target, by posing yourself the following questions:
Who is your potential customer?
What does he/she buy in this niche, in general, and on the net?
Are these products/services important to the customer? Why?
At what prices
will the prospect be interested in buying?
How strong are you in this domain? If not quite strong, what
would it take for
you to become a guru? And how would you become one?
What would motivate the prospect to buy from you? What are your
USPs?
Is it Price? Speed of Delivery? Convenience? What else?
Who are your competitors?
How can you make your customers believe in the credibility of
your
product/ web site? Do you have testimonials? From whom? Are
they
presentable?
Research a lot. Become
a member of the best of the newsgroups in your
domain and related domains. Think of what in your product/ service
would
motivate your prospect to read your communications and buy from
you?
Create your targeted
communication strategy, based on your research, to
appeal to your prospects. Identify your long term and short-term
goals. Achieve
them through a series of powerful communication materials like
e-zines,
newsletters and sales mailers. Plan newsletters for a minimum
of a one-year
period and decide how you will keep subscriber interest alive.
Your
communication must appeal to the long-term loyal subscribers,
yet make sense
to the new subscribers. . You could also invite guest writers
(paid or free) to
contribute relevant articles.
Make it a point to
answer queries from prospects. It builds a relationship and
helps you learn a lot too.
It would be great
if all these can bring success overnight. But the fact of the
matter is, it takes time. You need to build expertise, strategize
and create
credibility. But, ultimately, smart work and perseverance would
surely pay off!
