2. Online Success Story

Enfantrepreneur storms the Adult World

Michael Dell hit upon the idea of selling computers at 19.
Bill Gates turned programmer at 13.
Steve Jobs showcased the Apple at 21.

But, Keith had his initiation into the Internet at 3,
worked on the PC at 7 and started designing websites
when he was 9.

And at 11, Keith was a celebrity closing business deals in
far away China.

Internet has opened the floodgates to young entrepreneurs to
strike it rich. Many have burnt their fingers, and some
their family savings, but not this enfantrepreneur who is
making waves in an Adult World.

President and CEO of Cyberteks Design, 15-year-old Keith is
an award-winning web designer. Headquartered in London,
Ontario, Canada, Cyberteks Design is a globally recognized
'interactive design studio, e-commerce, on-line marketing
and web hosting company.' It has offices in London, Ontario,
New York and China besides sales offices overseas.

Bagging his first commercial order, in 2000, of Kewl
Threads, in the clothing line, Keith's Cyberteks went on to
touch $130,000 revenues the same year. The company is also
an authorized reseller for Acer, InfoSpace.com Canada
Incorporated, Trillium Computers, among others.

Initially, Cyberteks corporate office was the basement of
Keith's home. And his dad, Deepal Peiris put in his papers
at a London tech firm to join Keith's Cyberteks as the vice
president and key strategist.

In February 2001, Keith received an invitation from the
Canadian Prime Minister Chrétien's office, to join a
delegation of businessmen to China. He spoke at conferences
at Beijing and Shangai. He did bag a few contracts. And,
yes, plenty of accolades from Corporate America.

On a typical day, Keith attends school, rushes home by
evening, sits with the newspaper for an hour and works on
Cyberteks's jobs for three hours, and finishes his homework.
In between, being an avid fan, he finds time to play hockey.

At 12, when a reporter from The Sports Network asked him if
he wanted to be the Bill Gates of web design, Keith,
without a flinch, replied that every businessman's aim is
to monopolize the industry he is in.

While he insists he's like every other kid, he finds
business more interesting than school.

Small wonder why Keith wants to attend Harvard University.

Powerful Communication for Great Profits!

Lara looked out at the cluster of dismal apartments for the
hundredth time. She wondered whether there was some means
she could make more money - with two small kids, going out
to work was out of question. Besides, she had no degree, no
talent to speak off - except that her hobby was Ikebana-the
beautiful Japanese art of arranging flowers.

Just then the doorbell rang, it was Hazel, her smart
neighbor who seemed to read her thoughts, " You're do good
at Ikebana. Why don't you create a website offering ikebana
courses and accessories. Since it's quite a rare art, I'm
sure there'll be many interested housewives who'll attend."
She followed Hazel's suggestions and worked hard. Soon,
enough, she made enough to employ babysitters and start her
own Ikebana teaching center.

What are the secrets of Lara's success? She had discovered
her USP (unique selling proposition) by becoming an expert
in her chosen line of business and identified her target -
housewives. Like Lara, you could develop a hobby into a
lucrative business proposition. An USP is all about creating
a niche for yourself differentiating you from other
businesses. Don't worry if the niche is small.

Now, identify your target, by posing yourself the following
questions:

Who is likely to become your typical customer?
What does he/she buy, in general and on the net?
Why are these products/services important to the customer?
How strong are you in this domain? If we are not, how are
you planning to build it?
What would motivate the prospective customer to buy from
us?
What are our USPs? Is it Price? Quality? Delivery?
Convenience?
Who are your competitors?
How can you make your customers believe in your product/
web site?

Research a lot. Become a members of all newsgroups in your
domain, and related domains. Think of what your would
motivate your prospects to read.

Create your targeted communication strategy based on the
research to appeal to prospects. Identify your long term and
short term goals. Achieve them through a series of powerful
communication materials like e-zines, newsletters and sales
mailers. Plan newsletters for a minimum of a one year period
and decide how you will keep subscriber interest alive. They
must appeal to both long-term loyal subscribers, yet make
sense and stay relevant to new subscribers. . You could also
invite guest writers (paid or free) to contribute relevant
articles.

Make it a point to answer queries from prospects. It builds
a relationship and helps you learn a lot too.

It would be great if all these can bring success overnight.
But the reality is, it takes time, and the success potential
varies from industry to industry. You need to build expertise,
strategize and create credibility.

But hard work and perseverance would pay off richly!
