Striking a pot of Gold Online

Corey Rudl needs no introduction to online entrepreneurs.
His insight into the Internet draws over 1.8 million
visitors to his sites, and rakes in about $6 million each
year.

Wow! If that's not success. What else is?

But, to tell you the secret, his online success began by
fluke. In the fall of 1994, he looked to the Internet to
enhance revenues. Before this, Corey Rudl rolled out a book
'Car Secrets Revealed,' spent $20,000 publishing and
promoting this book.

And, ....hold it. It flopped.

A friend suggested he put up an Automotive Site and promote
his book there. He did just that. Then suddenly things
began to happen and it turned out to be the fastest selling
car book online, generating $140,000 net profits in the
first nine months. And, he had an affiliate program even
before Amazon ever thought of it.

How did he do it? His secrets - spending long hours on the
Net and using every idea, tip and trick in the book and
outside of it.

He reveals he attended seminars paying up to $7,000
listening to Jay Abraham, Gary Halbert, Mike Enlow and
Ted Nicholas. Now, he earns over $2,600,000 in sales each
year, with just five employees on his payrolls. And
charges a few hundred dollars per hour of consultation.
Besides, he has a large clientele including Fortune
500 companies.

He believes in generating multiple income streams,
automating them and then moving on to the next opportunity.

A 100% online entrepreneur, he recommends online-savvy
people to put up an effective website and drive traffic.
Don't sit there waiting for things to happen. Also, he
suggests that one shouldn't put all the eggs in one
basket, rather one should spread the risks.

It would be hard to believe that his company began as a
one-man-show and that he learnt everything about HTML, FTP,
banner ads and traffic generating. When CarSecrets.com
became a hit, people began enquiring how a simple site
turned a success. Almost immediately, he churned out
'The Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on the
Internet.' - a runaway bestseller.

How does one succeed online?
Rudl opines that the Internet is the best medium to locate
a niche, a group that has a common interest. Next, find a
common problem, then find a solution and sell it. Build a
community, he says. Use email, newsgroups, ezines and
every other available tool. But, build the community.
That's the way to make it online.

Online Success - is it for real?

I watched my friend dunk his French fries generously in
ketchup as he looked up at me. "Still haven't changed. Have
you? Still believe that there is a pot of gold at the end of
the Internet rainbow. Isn't it?" asked my friend Joe. "Yes.
It's as real as these French fries," I replied, and not
without reason.

Before you dismiss him as one of those die-hard cynics
averse to risks, let me tell you something. The more
adventurous of the two, this risk taker plunged into new
ventures like fish to water, and usually succeeded.

However, with online ventures, he seemed to have bitten off
more than he could chew. He had invested heavily and watched
his savings vanish a year ago. Disheartened, he swore off
online business. "I worked hard, ploughed in my savings and
followed most of what the gurus said to a 'T.' But the magic
never happened."

I recently met him again at a stock market seminar and
wondered whether he had changed. Ah! No, he was as skeptical
as before. "The stock markets look promising and business
is picking up, but I don't see chances of the revival of
online ventures," he replied.

I beg to differ. I have a more optimistic outlook, and with
sound reason. One dotcom bust doesn't spell the end of the
road for online businesses. The Internet is for real and an
entity that is growing phenomenally, in Jurassic proportions.

One business model might have failed - but that's no reason
to lose heart. Try again, take a reality check - and
analyze why it happened. Maybe, even check with a few
prospects why they did not buy from you or use your
services.

Are your competitors doing well? Or are there at least a few
who are doing well? What have they got that you haven't?
You'll be surprised at what an eye-opener this can be. Now,
your business model will gain a new perspective, eventually
pushing you towards success.

Don't worry about economic slowdowns - history shows us that
these are just cycles and are ALWAYS followed by revivals.

The current online phase we are going through is 'a learning
curve' - the process of making mistakes and learning from
them. The next move is to work based on this learning, and
those who manage to do this quickly enough will be the
'early adaptors' who will succeed in the new age. They will
also have the 'first mover' advantage.

The secret to making a success of online ventures is to go
'slow and steady' like the tortoise, despite living in a
hare-paced world. The results are what count, you see. The
prospects are bright, just that it could be a little long
term. So keep your chin up friend, you've seen the worst of
it; things can only improve, from here on.

Now, to directly take on the problems haunting online
ventures - the high costs of running an organization, the
infrastructure, manpower and other resources.

business. But all good things come to those who wait - so
you'll have to wait for the next article in this column!
