>From
medicine to money-making on the net
Raj,
Realizing quite
early that medicine wasn't giving him the freedom or money to
enjoy life, Ken Evoy, a Canadian physician at McGill University
in Montreal, turned toward another absorbing passion. Designing
Toys.
Along with his
wife, he went on to make millions from royalty selling two dozen
inventions to corporations across the globe.
But, we aren't
going to talk about this.
Rather, there is
a much more interesting story that I'd like to tell you,

The story of how
a 'web-sessed' Ken went on to build a successful online
business.
For nearly six
years before 1996, he had developed a proven investment
strategy. He turned a $5,000 investment into a $150,000 during
these years.
When he got
totally kicked up about the Internet, he put together all his
strategies and created a software to help identify potential
investment possibilities.
This is a
perfect example of how a little known strength of an individual
can be turned into a fortune, by making effective use of
technology, to take it to the world.
Like any
entrepreneur, he was full of doubts about the Internet. But, he
went ahead and launched a site http://www.sitesell.com by the
end of 1997.
And, before I
forget, let me tell you that Ken Evoy loved teaching. And so
teaching his success came easily to him.
'Site Build It!'
(SBI!), his first product, is a complete system of integrated
tools and applications to build and market a successful
website.
This business
earned Ken and his wife between $1,000 and $5,000 each
day!
Yet, he didn't
stop there. He went on to roll out info products.

Sell 2002" teaches you the A to Z of building a successful
website. It sold 20,000 copies in just 10 months and is

"Make Your
Knowledge Sell!" deals with creating ebooks and selling them
yourself. He has authored three other books that have met

e-zine - a way to tremendous
profits

One of the most
powerful ways to succeed online is to build a community of your
prospects/ clients, and keep the community active and alive.
This will work well with offline business as well.
One proven way
to build communities online is to create an e-zine, and apart
from making it an interactive community, subtly update your
prospects and customers about your products and
services.
This is a very
cost effective way too.
Believe me, the
e-zine can work wonders, if used well. It can increase the % of
customer conversion, up the purchase per customer, enhance
revenues, and of course, increase profits, build loyalty and
also bring in new customers.
And, to top it
all, it costs peanuts.
Contrary to
popular belief, the e-zine adapts itself admirably to online as
well as the traditional brick-and-mortar business. Let me
illustrate with an example, as to how an offline business can
look up with the help of an e-zine.
Let's say I run
a 'toy shop' in a city. How can an e-zine help further my
business?
Every day
visitors walk into my shop. Some buy, some don't. Some drop by a
second time, some may not. Windowshopping is trend to contend
with, you see!
Usually, what
happens in most shops? Only a small % of the walk-ins buy. And
the shops, on their part, may send them some mailers, which may
produce marginal results.
But, what do I
do?
I never fail to
collect the names and mail ids of the prospects who visit my
shop.
I create an
interesting set of themes, games and learning revolving around
each of my toys. Involving a Child Psychologist in the above
process, I build a Strategy and an Action Plan for the
development of the physical, emotional and intellectual
faculties of the children of my prospects.
Hey! What have I
done now?
I have
innovatively changed my shop into an absorbing 'Children's
Personality Development Institute'. I then involve parents
actively in the development of their child's intelligence and
personality. And share with them, my strategies for introduction
of the games at my shop.
And, boy! They
love it.
My weekly e-zine
is written by a professional writer and sent FREE to all my
customers who opt for it.
Also, I conduct
chat shows with my Child Psychologist, a few delighted parents
and some educationists.
I even brand my
e-zine, giving it an appropriate name.
What next, did
you ask?
I keep hard
copies of the e-zine at my shop and ask every prospect who comes
in if he/ she would like to have her own copy every month. With
the guarantee that his/ her mail id will never be shared with
anyone else.
And, hence, with
their permission, I begin to build a subscriber list.
Over time, my
list grows, as it is not my 'Sales Mailer', but a FREE Course on
'Parenting'. Don't you agree that parents will thank me for the
interest in their child's welfare?
That too, when
I'm supposed to just sell toys!
After a period
of time, if I fail to send the e-zine one month, I have people
calling me to enquire why.
What will be the
size of my list?
Let's say, I
have 50 walk-ins a day. Assuming I have a conversion of 20%,
buying for $30 per customer, I make 10 sales amounting to $300 a
day.
And let's assume
that, with my new strategy, 50% of the walk-ins subscribe to my
e-zine. So, I have 25 opt-in subscribers a day, on an average.
Over 300 working days in a year, I have 5000 walk-ins
who subscribe to my e-zine (assuming that the other 2500 are
non-unique visitors).
Let's assume
further that I am able to convert 10% of my e-zine subscribers
additionally into new buyers. This is not difficult at all,
because they have already visited my shop; so, I'm not new to
them.
So, in effect I
have created 500 additional buyers, that is, almost 2 sales a day
(20% sales) extra. We have ignored any repeat purchases they may
make.
Since the fixed
costs are already reckoned, I am likely to make 25 to 30% more
profits in month 12. And this would zoom to 50-60% more in 2
years, and perhaps double in 3 years.
All, at almost
no cost.
There are other
intangible benefits. My business would have become a brand, given
its new positioning. Which, in turn, would add to my top lines
and bottom lines.
Can you think of
a simpler and cost effective way to grow an offline
business?
But, will this
work for every business?
Why wouldn't it?
If you use it effectively and not turn it into another of those
sales mailers.
The e-zine is
the best and the most cost effective eCRM tool ever. Try it to
believe it!
